BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—In the Gryphons' 2016 season opener, Sarah Lawrence College men's tennis was defeated by The City College of New York, 6-3, in a non-conference match at Andrews Courts on Wednesday.

DOUBLES
In doubles, SLC took an early lead in the match, stealing two of the three available points. At No. 2 doubles, rookie
Ian Gonzalez (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) and senior
Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela/ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)) were the first to put a point on the board. The Gryphons yielded in the first game but won the next eight in a row in their 8-1 triumph. In the No. 3 match, senior
James Berry (New York, N.Y./Kent) and first year
Alex Wah (New York, N.Y./Riverdale Country / Bay Sch. of S.F.) shutout their CCNY foes, 8-0, giving the Green and White a 2-0 edge on the scoreboard.
In the No. 1 doubles match, rookies
Matias Sanchez (Córdoba, Argentina/Academia Arguello) and
Garrett Hsuan (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bard H.S. Early College) fell behind by an early break point but tied the match at 3-3. From there, the Beavers took control and came away with an 8-4 win.
SINGLES
CCNY took over control of the match by winning the first two singles matches to take the courts, winning in straight sets in the No. 1 and No. 5 matches.
At No. 6 singles, Berry and his opponent were stuck on serve until 5-4 in the opening set. The senior Gryphon scored a break point to win the frame, 6-4, but fell behind 3-5 in the second set. Putting his athleticism to work, Berry won four straight games and closed out his first career match with a win, 6-4, 7-5.
With the match tied at 3-3, CCNY regained momentum by winning the opening set of the three remaining matches. The Beavers clinched the match with wins at No. 4 and No. 3 singles.
TIEBREAKER ENDING
In the No. 2 singles match, Hsuan recovered from a 6-4 loss in the first set and took the second set by an identical margin. Facing a 10-point super-tiebreaker to decide the victor, Hsuan was tied 3-3 at the first court change. With the pressure mounting, both opponents struggled to keep their first serve in play, and eventually, Hsuan was overcome, 10-5.

Sarah Lawrence goes on hiatus and returns to action on Saturday, April 2. The Gryphons host Farmingdale State in the teams' Skyline opener at 1 p.m.
