Match Results

PATCHOGUE, N.Y.
—Sarah Lawrence College men's tennis earned its first-ever Skyline Conference victory, edging St. Joseph's College Long Island, 5-4, in a Skyline match at SJC Outdoor Athletic Complex on Sunday.

IN SHORT
Sarah Lawrence (1-4, 1-2 Skyline) def. St. Joseph's (1-4, 1-2 Skyline), 5-4.

IN THE RECORD BOOK
Following an 0-6 shutout against league opponents in the program's 2015 Skyline debut, Sunday's match is the team's first victory in the conference. The win is also a first for Head Coach Scott Miller, who took the helm in the fall.

DOUBLES
Sarah Lawrence began the match by taking two of the three available doubles points. In the top spot, rookies Matias Sanchez (Córdoba, Argentina/Academia Arguello) and Ian Gonzalez (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) teamed up to win the No. 1 match, 8-3. The win is the pair's first in their third match together.

At No. 2 doubles, rookie Garrett Hsuan (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bard H.S. Early College) and sophomore Andre Garibaldi (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) combined for an easy 8-2 victory. The win marks the first victory for either Gryphon this season, and the match was their first as a partnership.

St. Joseph's fought off the sweep with an 8-1 win in the No. 3 doubles match, giving the Gryphons a 2-1 margin at the start of singles action.

SINGLES
Sanchez earned his second win of the weekend, playing at the No. 1 singles position. He cruised to a straight sets win, 6-3, 6-2, over his Golden Eagle opponent.

St. Joseph's responded by taking the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches in two sets each, leveling the team score at 2-2.

At No. 4 singles, Garibaldi had a breakout day, winning his second match against SJC. The sophomore Gryphon yielded only three games in his 6-2, 6-1, triumph, putting the Gryphons back out in front.

With two matches left on the courts, SLC needed to win one more to clinch the team victory. In the No. 6 match, rookie Arnie Welles (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick School) fought back from a 6-2 loss in the opening set and tied the second set at 6-6. In a tiebreaker, St. Joseph's narrowly came out on top, handing the Gryphon a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) defeat.

The team match came down to the final match featuring senior James Berry (New York, N.Y./Kent) in the No. 5 singles position. Berry swept the opening set but stumbled in the second, 6-0, 3-6. The two opponents fought to a 5-5 stalemate in the decisive set, and with another tiebreaker looming, Berry stepped up and won back-to-back games. His 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 victory clinched the final team point and victory for SLC.
