IN THE RECORD BOOK
SLC picked up its seventh win of the season, tying the program record of seven wins (7-11) in 2011. Five of the wins that season were against local rival The College of New Rochelle. By contrast, the 2016 season has seen the Gryphons pick up their first wins against five different opponents, including St. Joseph's Brooklyn. The Lady Bears had won the first 25 games against the Gryphons until SLC broke that streak in game two on Saturday.
GAME ONE
Rookie pitcher
Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) gave up two hits in the first two innings but held visitors scoreless. For SLC, rookie
Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) led off the first inning with a hit to right center, while the defenses kept control of the game.
St. Joseph's scored a run in the third inning on two hits, and the Lady Bears doubled the lead after a home run by Destiny Marino in the fourth. SLC first year
Baylie Petit (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) had a run in the fifth inning, but the Gryphon bats were otherwise quiet with SJC leading 2-0 after five innings. Back-to-back hits to start the sixth inning gave SJC another insurance run, 3-0.
In the sixth inning, Penna sailed a blast over the left field fence, breaking the silence and putting the Gryphons on the board, 3-1. SLC put two runners aboard in the seventh inning, but St. Joseph's held off the effort for the 3-1 win.
Cunningham finished the complete seven-inning game with two strikeouts, while Theresa Armano earned the win with two strikeouts and an earned run.
Penna batted 2 for 3 in game one, picking up a run and an RBI with her homer.
GAME TWO
The defenses dominated again in the early innings of the second game. SLC's first six batters were retired, while St. Joseph's stranded a runner in each of the first two innings.
St. Joseph's put the game's first runs on the board in the third inning. Nicole Quintana had the Lady Bears' only hit of the inning, a three-run home run to right center. The Gryphons had two miscues in the inning, resulting in a pair of unearned runs in the score book and putting St. Joseph's on top, 4-0.
The Gryphons collected their composure and put up a fight in the bottom of the third. Sophomore
Sarah Shapiro (Germantown, Md./Northwest) led off with a single down the left line, and classmate
Em Hammett (Columbus, Ohio/The Wellington School) followed with an outfield single. After being held hitless in game one, sophomore
Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) got her first hit of the day with a home run over the left-field fence, slashing the deficit to 4-3.
St. Joseph's picked up another run in the fourth inning after Marino hit her second home run of the day.
SLC turned the game around in the bottom of the fourth. Starting pitcher
Kamaron McNair (Lawrence Township, N.J./The Hun School) hit her second home run of the season to lead off the inning. Next at the plate, rookie
Olivia Henry (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) also went yard with her first career home run, tying the game at 5-5. Cunningham came to the plate and singled to left. Shapiro moved Cunningham to second on a sacrifice, where
Sam Amberchan (Alameda, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) took over as a pinch runner. Hammett moved Amberchan to third base with a hit, and the senior Gryphon scored the go-ahead run on a Lady Bear error to give Sarah Lawrence its first lead of the day, 6-5.
SLC piled on two more runs in the fifth inning. McNair and Henry had back-to-back hits, and a St. Joseph's error opened the door for a 2-RBI single by Shapiro. The Green and White maintained their 8-5 edge through a scoreless sixth and into the seventh.
St. Joseph's threatened in the final inning when the first two Lady Bears hit safely. Armano represented the tying run and hit an RBI-single to make it an 8-6 game. Next at the plate, Marino lined a shot to McNair at first base, who made an unassisted double play to put SLC one out from victory.
St. Joseph's hit an RBI-single from the eight-spot, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. In the end, Henry assisted the final putout to clinch the Gryphons' first-ever win over the Lady Bears, 8-7.
Cunningham earned the win despite allowing two runs in a four-inning relief appearance. McNair had a strikeout and three-earned runs, giving up three hits over three innings.
Shapiro finished the game 2 for 2 from the plate, including a run and two more batted in. Hammett had her second multi-hit game of the season, while Vuyovich, McNair and Henry all recorded two hits in the win.
