Softball Faces Old Westbury in Skyline Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College softball played its final Skyline games of the season, falling to SUNY College at Old Westbury in a pair of games at Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex on Friday.

IN SHORT
Old Westbury def. Sarah Lawrence, 3-1.
Old Westbury (10-12, 6-12 Skyline) def. Sarah Lawrence (7-22, 2-16 Skyline), 9-7.

GAME ONE
Sarah Lawrence scored the day's first run in the top of the first inning of the opener. Rookie Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) drew a seven-pitch walk to reach first base and advanced to second on a stolen base. Fellow first year Olivia Henry (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) singled through the right side to bring Henry home, putting SLC on the scoreboard, 1-0.

On defense, pitcher Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) dismissed the Panthers in order in the first inning to start one of her stronger outings of the season.

Sophomore Em Hammett (Columbus, Ohio/The Wellington School) singled in a scoreless second inning, while Penna and sophomore Kamaron McNair (Lawrenceville, N.J./The Hun School) both hit safely in the third inning.

In the bottom of the third, Cunningham gave up a pair of hits with a Gryphon error to load the bags. The rookie hurler worked her way out of trouble and escaped the inning without an OW run.

Cunningham helped herself with a lead-off single in the fourth but was unable to advance beyond second base. Henry had her second hit of the day in the fifth inning. Old Westbury added hits in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, but Cunningham kept the Panthers from scoring and held onto the 1-0 edge.

SLC went down in order in the sixth, and the damage was done in the home side of the inning. Four OW hits and a Gryphon error resulted in three Panther runs.

Trailing 3-1 in the seventh, Sarah Lawrence put its first two batters on base after junior Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) drew a lead-off walk and Penna hit an infield single. With the go-ahead run at the plate, Old Westbury's Amanda Fucci rose to the challenge and pitched three straight outs to close out the win for the home team.

Cunningham finished the six-inning complete game with four strikeouts, allowing three runs on nine hits. Fucci picked up her fifth win of the season after holding the Gryphons to one earned run despite only one strikeout.

GAME TWO
In the second game of the twinbill, Penna led off the game with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) grounded out but drove in her first RBI of the day, and once again SLC took a 1-0 lead.

OW responded by scoring early, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first. Cunningham singled in the second inning, but SLC was held scoreless in the second and third innings. For OW, three hits and two errors in the bottom of the third inning added four runs to the Panther lead, making it a 6-1 game.

SLC's offense rebounded in the fourth inning. McNair, rookie Baylie Petit (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) and Cunningham made contact for three-straight hits to load the bases. Hammett hit an RBI-single to chip away at the deficit, 6-2.

In the top of the fifth inning, Henry cleared the left-field fence for her second career home run, closing the gap further, 6-3.

Old Westbury halted the Gryphon momentum with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the advantage, 9-3. The Gryphons went down in order in the top of the sixth and came to the plate seeking a seventh-inning rally.

Hammett hit her third single of the day, and Chafatelli was struck by a pitch for the second time in the series. Senior Sam Amberchan (Alameda, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) reached first base on balls with on her first plate appearance of the day, loading the bases with Gryphons. Vuyovich scored Hammett on a sacrifice fly, and soon, SLC was down to its last out, trailing 9-4.

As Fucci's arm tired with nearly two full games in the books, the righty wavered. The next three Gryphons to step in the box were struck by errant pitches. McNair loaded the bases, while Petit and Cunningham each earned an RBI for their bruises, slicing the lead to 9-6. Sophomore Sarah Shapiro (Germantown, Md./Northwest) stepped up and hit an RBI-single off OW reliever Nicole DeCola, but the replacement right-hander shut down the rally and saved the 9-7 win.

In the circle, McNair was dealt the loss, while Cunningham added three to her strikeout total in four innings of relief.
