Men's Tennis Ends Season at Purchase

Match Results

PURCHASE, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College men's tennis concluded the 2016 season with a 7-2 loss at Purchase College, eliminating the Gryphons from Skyline postseason contention on Thursday.

IN SHORT
Purchase (8-7, 3-3 Skyline) def. Sarah Lawrence (5-7, 3-4 Skyline), 7-2.

IN THE RECORD BOOK
The Gryphons finished the season with their most wins since finishing 2013 with an identical 5-7 record. This year's team rebounded from an 0-6 Skyline debut in 2015 to pick up SLC's first three victories in its new conference. Prior to the 2016 season, SLC had never won more than three matches against NCAA Division III opponents, but all five of this year's wins were against D-III rivals.

SENIORS
With Saturday's scheduled season-finale cancelled, Thursday's match marked the end of the careers of two Gryphons. Senior Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela/ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)) won six matches in his debut season in 2015, adding four more wins in '16. Senior James Berry (New York, N.Y./Kent) made his collegiate debut this season, winning five singles and four doubles matches.

AGAINST THE PANTHERS
Last season's Skyline regular-season runner-up, Purchase opened up Thursday's match by winning all three doubles matches. Sucre and sophomore Andre Garibaldi (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) fared the best of the Gryphon pairs, falling in the No. 2 match, 8-6.

In singles play, SLC's No. 2 player Garrett Hsuan (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bard H.S. Early College) forced a tiebreaker in his opening set, but after falling 7-6 (7-2), he was overcome in the second-set, 6-4.

At No. 3 singles, rookie Ian Gonzalez (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) picked up one of two team points for the Green and White. The rookie blanked his PC opponent, 6-0, in the first set before taking the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-3).

Garibaldi ended his sophomore season with a victory, earning a win at No. 4 singles. He dropped his first set, 6-4, and fought back to tie the second set at six games apiece. In a lengthy tiebreaker, Garibaldi overcame his opponent 7-6 (9-7), and the Gryphon completed the rally with a victory in the super-tiebreaker.
