SENIOR DAY
The doubleheader marked the end of the career of senior
Sam Amberchan (Alameda, Calif./Menlo-Atherton). The Gryphon concluded her three-season career with nine hits, 14 runs and six runs batted in, playing as a key outfielder and utility player. Amberchan leaves her name in the SLC record book as the program's career leader in successful sacrifice bunts.
RECORD-BREAKING WINS
With the two victories on Thursday, the 2016 team set a new record for wins in the 12-season history of the team. The Gryphons picked up their first-ever victories against Bay Path University, Southern Vermont College, John Jay College, York College (N.Y.), and long-time rival St. Joseph's College Brooklyn. Softball also emerged as the Gryphons' winningest program of 2015-16 across all varsity teams.
GAME ONE
Rookie pitcher
Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) pitched a gem in the evening's first game, retiring six of the first seven Blue Angels at the plate.
Sophomore
Kamaron McNair (Lawrenceville, N.J./The Hun School) had the Gryphons' only hit in the scoreless first inning, but the bats came alive in the second inning. Cunningham led off the second inning with a walk, and sophomore
Sarah Shapiro (Germantown, Md./Northwest) laid a bunt down the third-base line for a single. Junior
Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) hit a two-RBI single to plate both Gryphons, and rookie
Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) followed with an RBI-double. Sophomore
Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) batted home SLC's fourth run with an RBI-triple off the right-center fence, leaving the Green and White with a 4-0 advantage after two innings.
On the defensive side, Cunningham logged five strikeouts in the third and fourth innings to preserve the shutout.
SLC iced the game with four more runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore
Em Hammett (Columbus, Ohio/The Wellington School) led off with a single, and Chafatelli hit her second single in as many at bats. Amberchan batted in a run and reached home when Penna launched her third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field. The effort left the Gryphons on top, 8-0, needing three outs to clinch victory.
Cunningham completed her 10th complete game and third shutout by striking out two more batters in the final inning. The rookie pitcher totaled 10 strikeouts in the game, setting a new SLC single-game record. For their part, the Blue Angels had five hits, and pitcher Victoria Rivera had four strikeouts in the loss.
The game also featured the Gryphons' second-ever team cycle, having accomplished the feat on April 29, 2014, against the Blue Angels.
GAME TWO
The first inning of the second game included the Blue Angels' first run of the series, scoring an unearned run after capitalizing on a Gryphon error.
SLC erased the deficit after scoring a pair of runs without a hit in the bottom of the frame, benefiting from CNR pitching miscues. Penna and Vuyovich both scored after reaching first base on balls, while McNair was stranded following her free pass. SLC led 2-1 after the first inning.
The Gryphon defense settled down to keep CNR scoreless in the second inning. Hammett led off the home side with a single to left field, and Chafatelli recorded her third single of the day on a beautifully-placed bunt. Amberchan reached on a walk, and Penna batted home Hammett to increase the lead to 3-1.
CNR scored another run on two Gryphon errors in the third inning. Rookie
Olivia Henry (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) singled in the bottom of the inning, and Shapiro doubled, but both were stranded.
In the fourth, Amberchan reached on a CNR error and put her speed to use, advancing to third base on a passed ball and wild pitch. Penna brought Amberchan home with a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-2 game. Vuyovich's final at-bat of the season was erased when she was hit by a pitch.
SLC closed out the CNR-half of the fifth inning without incident, and the game was halted as the fading light left little option to continue.
With another stellar performance, McNair earned her SLC-record 11th career win by tossing the complete five innings. McNair allowed two unearned runs on one hit while striking out nine Blue Angels, increasing her career total to 116. The game also marked the first time that sophomore
Isabel Lamont (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) made a start at first base this season.
THE END
Thursday's events marked the official conclusion of Sarah Lawrence College's first year as a full member of NCAA Division III. Skyline All-Conference selections are expected to be released soon after the conclusion of the championship tournament, taking place April 29-May 1 at Mount Saint Mary College.
