NEW YORK—Sarah Lawrence College men's tennis player
Matias Sanchez (Córdoba, Argentina/Academia Arguello) was named to the 2016 Skyline Men's Tennis All-Conference First Team, as announced by the league earlier this month. In the program's second season in the league, Sanchez is the first Gryphon to receive first team All-Skyline honors in men's tennis.
Sanchez played all 12 matches this season as the Gryphons' No. 1 singles player and as a member of the No. 1 doubles pairing. The first-year Gryphon recorded five wins in singles play, while adding four victories in doubles action.
Sanchez earned back-to-back singles victories against Lehman College (April 9) and St. Joseph's College Long Island (April 10), earning Skyline Rookie of the Week accolades in the process. He also notched his first career doubles win in the same weekend, defeating St. Joseph's with partner
Ian Gonzalez (Framingham, Mass./Framingham).
He went on to win a combined six-straight matches, sweeping all of his singles and doubles matches against three-straight opponents: Sage (April 17), York (April 19) and St. Joseph's Brooklyn (April 23).
Sanchez was honored in May as the men's tennis team's MVP for the 2016 season. Sanchez is also a regular contributor to the SLC men's soccer program, playing in nine games last fall.
Last season,
Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School) '15 was the men's tennis program's first player to receive all-Skyline honors, taking second-team recognition.
