NEW YORK—Sarah Lawrence College student-athlete
Matias Sanchez (Córdoba, Argentina/Academia Arguello) has been named 2015-16 Skyline Conference Men's Tennis co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as announced by the league on Thursday.
Sanchez was selected alongside Yeshiva's Dmitri Lebedyev, and the two join 12 other student-athletes from around the conference to be recognized in their respective winter and spring sports.
In men's tennis, the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award is presented to the first-team All-Conference performer who carries the highest cumulative grade point average (minimum 3.30) during the spring 2016 semester. Sanchez completed the semester with a perfect 4.0 GPA to guarantee a share of the award.
Sanchez is the first men's tennis student-athlete to receive first-team Skyline all-conference accolades. As a rookie, he played all 12 matches this season as the Gryphons' No. 1 singles player and as a member of the No. 1 doubles pairing. The first-year Gryphon recorded five wins in singles play while adding four victories in doubles action.
Sanchez earned back-to-back singles victories against Lehman College (April 9) and St. Joseph's College Long Island (April 10), earning Skyline Rookie of the Week accolades in the process. He also notched his first career doubles win in the same weekend, defeating St. Joseph's with partner
Ian Gonzalez (Framingham, Mass./Framingham).
Sanchez went on to win a combined six-straight matches, sweeping all of his singles and doubles matches against three-straight opponents: Sage (April 17), York (April 19) and St. Joseph's Brooklyn (April 23).
Sanchez is the second Gryphon to earn Skyline Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades, following men's swimmer
Cameron Martinez who was honored in 2014-15.
