BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College men's tennis earned its first 3-0 start to a season since 2003 after the Gryphons edged Bard College, 5-4, in a non-conference match at SLC Tennis Courts on Sunday.
IN SHORT
Sarah Lawrence (3-0) defeated Bard (2-4), 5-4.
DOUBLES
The Gryphons started the day by picking up two of the three doubles points and what would prove to be the critical edge in the match.
In the No. 3 match, rookie
Mehran Hicks (Hartsdale, N.Y./The Masters School) and sophomore
Alex Wah (New York, N.Y./Riverdale Country / Bay Sch. of S.F.) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and maintained the advantage at 5-2. The Gryphons won three of the last four games in the set to put the first point on the team scoreboard with their 8-3 win in their second match as a pair.
Bard responded by taking the win in the No. 1 match after the Gryphons fell off the pace and were downed, 8-3.
The No. 2 match saw junior
Andre Garibaldi (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) partner with senior
Jasper Soloff (New York, N.Y./Trevor Day School) in the duo's first-ever match as teammates. The Gryphons took a 6-1 advantage in the match, and despite late trouble, the Green and White ousted their Raptors challengers, 8-5.
SINGLES
In his first collegiate match, rookie
Dylan Reagh (Brooklyn, N.Y./Inst. for Collaborative Ed.) was the first to score a team point in singles action. Playing in the No. 5 match, the first year Gryphon won back-to-back games to close out the first set. In the second set, he won three of the last four games to close out a 6-4, 6-3 victory and extend the team lead to 3-1.
Bard retaliated by taking the No. 1 singles match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. The No. 3 Raptor took the first set, 6-0, and won the team point after his Gryphon foe was forced out due to injury. The team score was deadlocked with three matches to play, 3-3.
At No. 6 singles, senior
Jack Bell (Washington, D.C./British School of Washington) returned for his first match since the 2014 season. Bard won the last two games of the 6-4 opening set, but Bell responded by winning the first four games of set two. After polishing off a win in the second stanza, the Gryphon kept momentum and took a 4-1 advantage in set three before winning the match 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
With the Gryphons one match from victory, Bard fought off the decisive point in the No. 2 match. The Raptor took the point in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, and tied the score once again 4-4.
Senior
Arnie Welles (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick School) took to the court in the No. 4 match, holding the fate of the team in his hands. The opening set was closely contested, and after a 6-6 draw, Welles won the tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4). The Gryphon powered through the second set and came away triumphant, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.

Sarah Lawrence is slated to return to Skyline play on Tuesday with a road match against Yeshiva University. The Gryphons return home to host Lehman College on Thursday at 6 p.m.
