KINGS POINT, N.Y.—Junior
Andre Garibaldi (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) scored a win in the Gryphons' final match of the season as No. 6 seed Sarah Lawrence College was eliminated from the postseason by No. 3 U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 5-1, in the first round of the Skyline Men's Tennis Championship at USMMA Courts on Tuesday.
HISTORY MADE
Sarah Lawrence qualified for the postseason thanks to a trio of victories in Skyline action. The Gryphons earned the No. 6 seed in the tournament and became the College's second team to qualify for a Skyline postseason tournament, following the 2015 women's tennis squad.
DOUBLES
For the eighth time this season, sophomores
Matias Sanchez (Córdoba, Argentina/Academia Arguello) and
Ian Gonzalez (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) represented the Gryphons in the No. 1 doubles match. The duo were defeated, 8-0.
In the No. 2 match, sophomore
Garrett Hsuan (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bard H.S. Early College) and rookie
Mehran Hicks (Hartsdale, N.Y./The Masters School) partnered for just the third time this season. They won a pair of games but were ultimately downed, 8-2.
Rookie
Aidan Reckziegel (Montreal, Canada/Idyllwild Arts Acad. (Calif.)) teamed with Garibaldi in the No. 3 doubles match. In their debut as a partnership, the Gryphons won three games in their 8-3 loss.
SINGLES
With SLC trailing, 3-0, Garibaldi put Sarah Lawrence on the scoreboard with a victory in the No. 6 singles match. In just his third singles match of the season, the junior Gryphon cruised through both his sets to pick up a 6-1, 6-1 victory and prevent the Mariners from sweeping the match.
Hsuan completed the final match of his season with his contest at No. 2 singles. Merchant Marine fielded a challenging opponent who took the match, 6-0, 6-1.
In the decisive match, Sanchez held the top spot in the Gryphons' lineup, facing the No. 1 Mariner. His Merchant Marine opponent took the match, 6-3, 6-2, and eliminated Sarah Lawrence from the tournament.
In other action, Hicks won his opening set, 6-4, in the No. 5 match. He was tied, 1-1, in the second frame when the match was halted. At No. 4 singles, Reckziegel won four games in a 6-4 loss in his opening set and trailed the second, 3-1.
Gonzalez forced a tiebreaker in the first set of the No. 3 match. He lost that tiebreaker 7-6(7-2) before action concluded in the first game of the second set.
GARIBALDI IN THE RECORD BOOK
Garibaldi's six singles wins this season tie his career best and are tied for 10th most in a single season in team history. In addition, his team-leading six doubles wins this season are ninth most in a season all-time.
With his 11th career singles victory, Garibaldi ascended to tie for sixth on the Gryphons' all-time wins list. He also finished the season with 14 career doubles wins, fifth most in team history.
