ITHACA, N.Y.—On Wednesday, Sarah Lawrence College women's and men's swimming broke four school records on the first day of the 2014 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, hosted by Ithaca College.

Sophomore Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) highlighted the day by ascending the podium to finish third in the 200 yard individual medley. After posting an SLC-record time of 1:54.43 in the preliminaries, Martinez swam 1:53.19 in the championship final. His effort bettered the NCAA Championship B-cut qualifying time; SLC is expected to be national-championship eligible by 2016-17.

In the 500 yard freestyle, SLC record holder Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) set a personal best in the event (5:50.80), but rookie Gryphon Colette Harley (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) surpassed her in the same heat, posting a new SLC record of 5:45.02.

Back on the men's side, rookie Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)) set an SLC record in the 50 yard freestyle. His sprint of 22.55 was a half-second better than his previous team best set in December.

In the team's final race of the morning session, the Gryphon women's 200 yard medley relay squad broke another SLC record. Sophomore Sam Amberchan (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) and rookies Jacqueline Quirk (Millburn, N.J./Millburn), Harley and Gabby Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett) teamed to swim 2:06.45, improving the previous mark by 0.7 second. The same foursome returned in the evening to post an effort of 2:05.05, lowering their record and taking 15th place in the event.

After the first day of racing, the SLC men stand in 14th place, while the women are 15th in the team scoring.

Racing at the 2014 UNYSCSA Championships continues through Saturday. Morning sessions begin at 10 a.m. with evening finals at 6 p.m. Live results can be followed at tpmlphelps.com or with the Meet Mobile App.
