ITHACA, N.Y.—Sophomore Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) won his second title in as many days, highlighting the performance of Sarah Lawrence College women's and men's swimming at the 2014 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, hosted by Ithaca College. On the third day of competition Friday, Martinez doubled as 200 butterfly champion, adding to his 100 fly title from Thursday. The two SLC teams combined to break six team records on the day.

Entering the weekend as the event's top seed, Martinez rose to the challenge in Friday's 200 fly preliminaries, qualifying for the championship final in record fashion. His swim of 1:49.65 was enough to break the UNYSCSA Championship meet record and put him in the middle lane for the evening's final.

In the championship, Martinez led at every split, touching the wall first with nearly two seconds to spare. His 200 yard butterfly title-winning swim of 1:48.69 surpassed his own SLC record and the NCAA B Cut national qualifying standard. The same time would have placed him 10th at the 2013 NCAA Division III Swimming Championships.

Martinez finished his individual events with a third-place in the 200 yard individual medley to go with his 100 and 200 yard butterfly titles. He will round out the weekend as the lead-off leg in the Gryphons' 400 yard freestyle relay on Saturday.

In the day's second event, SLC's Colette Harley (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) became the first female Gryphon to score individual points at the championship meet. Her preliminary 200 yard butterfly swim of 2:24.70 broke the SLC record and slotted her 19th—in position for the C Final. She returned in the evening to take four seconds off her effort, and her mark of 2:20.05 earned Harley an 18th-place overall finish.

SLC's breaststrokers also had a stellar day in Friday's preliminaries. Rookie Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)) bettered his team record with a swim of 1:06.89 in the 100 yard breaststroke.

On the women's side, the 100 yard breaststroke saw rookie Jacqueline Quirk (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) knock off SLC's oldest standing record. Quirk touched the wall in 1:18.31, two-thirds of a second better than the previous mark set in 2009.

The day's last event saw Martinez step up and break another one of his own SLC records. As the lead off leg in the men's 800 yard freestyle relay, he led the Green and White foursome with a swim of 1:44.65 to better his own mark in the 200 free.

Teammates Chu, Jericho Walker-Roberts (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) and Doug Rubenstein (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton) rounded out the relay in 7:44.35, nearly a full minute better than SLC's previous record. The men placed 12th in the event, the best Sarah Lawrence relay finish in the two years that SLC has competed in the UNYSCSA meet.

For the Gryphon women, seniors Dzana Ashworth (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) and Jaime Chu (Hong Kong/Monte Vista) teamed with sophomore Monika Mednick (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) and first-year Lydia Mullen to take 15th place in the women's 800 yard freestyle relay.

After the third day in the four-day meet, the SLC men have climbed to 13th place in the team standings, while the women are 15th overall.

Action at the 2014 UNYSCSA Championships concludes on Saturday with a preliminary session beginning at 10 a.m. and final session at 6 p.m. Live results can be followed at tpmlphelps.com or with the Meet Mobile App.
