ITHACA, N.Y.—With one more team record broken on the final day of competition, Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming totaled 11 team records at the 2014 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, hosted by Ithaca College, Feb. 19-22.
Sophomore
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) highlighted the week with the Gryphons' most-successful appearance at the conference championships. After a third-place swim in the 200 yard individual medley on day one, Martinez blew away the field with victories in the 100 yard butterfly and 200 yard butterfly. His accomplishment marked the first time a Gryphon ascended to the top of the UNYSCSA podium.
On the final day of competition, Martinez teamed with rookie
Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)), senior
Doug Rubenstein (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton) and first-year
Jericho Walker-Roberts (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) to set the team's 11th and final team record of the meet. In the 400 yard freestyle relay, the quartet completed the event in 3:25.25, scoring points for 13th place overall.
In total, four Gryphon relays set team records at the UNYSCSA event, while Martinez set four individual records, and Chu knocked off another three SLC bests.
The 2013-14 season saw SLC men's swimming finish the year with its most wins (four) en route to its first winning season (4-3) in varsity program history. All but one—18 of 19—program records were bested this season.
