BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—On Monday, the Sarah Lawrence College Department of Athletics and Physical Education concluded the academic year with its Annual Athletics Banquet at Campbell Sports Center. Representatives of all SLC's varsity programs and the women's basketball club program were recognized for their achievements in athletics and academics.
Winners of the 2016 Alice Stone Ilchman Scholar Athlete award are senior
Nora Landes (Los Angeles, Calif./Cleveland Humanities Magnet) and
Brendan O'Connell (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy). Landes was a three-year contributor and two-time all-conference player for the women's tennis program. She spent the 2014 season abroad, and has the highest GPA among this year's senior student-athletes. O'Connell is a three-year player and Skyline academic honoree on the men's basketball team. He will be leaving SLC in the fall to pursue a 3-2 dual degree in business at Columbia University.
For the fourth year in a row, senior swimmer
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) was honored as Athlete of the Year. He concluded his career by earning honorable mention All-American accolades at the 2016 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, placing ninth in the 200 yard butterfly. Martinez totaled six UNYSCSA and seven Skyline titles in his career. Sophomore
Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) was also named Athlete of the Year after leading softball to its winningest season in its 12-year history. Vuyovich broke or extended 18 team records, leading her squad to the most wins of any varsity program this year.
The department also recognized Newcomers of the Year
Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and
Mohamed Camara (Macenta, Guinea/New World). Penna anchored the softball outfield, starting in all 31 games. She matched/beat four team records and made key plays that contributed to a program record in wins. Camara led the men's soccer offense and recorded the team's fourth-ever hat trick. He earned Skyline recognition as Rookie of the Week and Academic Honor Roll.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee honored rower
Soleil Groh (Seattle, Wash.) with the SAAC Gryphon Award. Groh organized team workouts and recruited new team members during a coaching vacancy in the fall semester. In the spring, Groh captained her squad and was invaluable to the program. She also served on the SAAC as a regularly-contributing member.
Sixteen departing Gryphons were presented with the Varsity Award for successful varsity participation in at least three academic years:
