Sarah Lawrence Athletics Hall of Fame
Leigh Heyman '98 was a key component of the Gryphons' success as a member of the men's and women's crew team, serving as the co-ed squad's coxswain. In 1995, he steered a Women's Novice 4+ boat to first-place finishes at the Dowling Invitational, Manhattan Invitational and Fall Metropolitan Championships. In 1996, he led a Men's Novice 4+ team to a third-place effort at the La Salle Invitational.
After his time at Sarah Lawrence, Heyman continued to shine as an alumus in the sport, going on to be the coxswain for the U.S. National Rowing Team from 2002-2007. Heyman was the champion in the lightweight 8+ in the 2002 U.S. Rowing Elite National Championships and in 2007 guided a Lightweight 8+ boat to a fifth-place performance at the FISA World Rowing Championships.
A native of Newton, Massachusetts, Heyman is a seven-time champion at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in the Men's Lightweight 8+ and a three-time champion at the Royal Canadian Henley.
Most recently, he competed on the Masters Women's 4+ boat for the Marlow Rowing Club in England. Heyman is an Elite Member of the New York Athletic Club and Full Member of the Leander Boat Club (UK).
After retiring from international competition, Heyman turned his focus to political campaigns, landing a role in the Obama Administration. Leigh served as director of new media technologies, leading the team that managed and developed technology for all of the President's online engagement. Previously, he played a key role in driving engagement for the 2008 and 2012 Obama presidential campaigns.
