Wednesday FinalsÂ
WEBSTER, N.Y.— Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) took second place in the 200 individual medley to lead Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming at the 2015 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, hosted by Nazareth College at Webster Aquatic Center on Wednesday. Action continues through Saturday, Feb. 21.
In Wednesday's preliminary session, Martinez swam the fastest time of all 50 competitors in the 200 yard IM event. He clocked in at 1:53.17, breaking his own SLC record by 0.02 second and surpassing the NCAA Championships provisional qualifying mark.
On Wednesday evening, Martinez carried his momentum and trimmed another 0.04 off his record time, improving it to 1:53.13. While the junior Gryphon bettered his own time, the effort fell just short of Joshua Lefeber of Stevens Institute, who improved his preliminary mark by 2.23 seconds en route to victory.
Martinez's accomplishment extends his streak to three consecutive years of breaking the Sarah Lawrence 200 IM record at the UNYSCSA Championships. He also placed among the association's top 10 in each season.
The first day also featured SLC's 200 yard medley relay. After qualifying in 13th place in the preliminary session, sophomores
Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)) and
Nick Ransom (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) teamed with Martinez and first year
Brendan McAlevy (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) to compete in Wednesday evening's finals. The quartet improved upon its preliminary time and captured 14th place with a swim of
1:51.93.
In Wednesday morning's preliminaries, Ransom swam a season best in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:37.06.
In the 50 free preliminaries, Chu placed among the top 40 finishers with a time of 22.85 seconds. McAlevy and sophomore
Amit Sankaran (San Francisco, Calif./Mallya Aditi International) swam career bests in the event during the session.
Through the first day of competition, the Gryphon men stand in 11th place overall.
