Thursday FinalsÂ
WEBSTER, N.Y.-Junior
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) won his third UNYSCSA title as Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming competed in day two of the 2015 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, hosted by Nazareth College at Webster Aquatic Center on Thursday. Action continues through Saturday, Feb. 21.
The defending champion in the event, Martinez cruised to first place in the 100 yard butterfly, adding to his resume of eight career top-10 UNYSCSA performances. In Thursday's preliminary session, he swam a season-best time of 49.50 seconds and captured the top position by more than half a second. Entering the championship final as the top seed, the junior lost 0.02 second off his time but still won the event by more than four tenths of a second, touching the wall in 49.52 seconds.
Martinez's time surpassed the NCAA Championship 'B' cut qualification standard. He has placed among the top 10 in the 100 butterfly in each of the past three seasons, following a sixth-place showing in 2013 and his first UNYSCSA title in 2014.
A trio of other Gryphons also competed in Thursday night's finals, as the Green and White hit the pool in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Leading off the team, Chu set a new SLC record in the 50 freestyle, completing the fastest lap in team history with a time of 22.29 seconds. His split was 0.15 second faster than his effort of 22.44 seconds in the preliminaries, and both swims surpassed his own previous record of 22.55 seconds.
Martinez followed Chu into the water, and rookie
Brendan McAlevy (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) and sophomore
Nick Ransom (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) rounded out the foursome. The squad completed the event in 1:35.76, good for 15th place and less than a second behind the team record.
Thursday's preliminary session featured career best swims by three more SLC swimmers. Ransom set a collegiate best of 1:14.62 in the 100 butterfly. In the 200 yard freestyle, sophomore
Amit Sankaran (San Francisco, Calif./Mallya Aditi International) swam a personal best of 2:49.41. Finally, in the 400 individual medley, senior
Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) posted a career best time of 5:25.21.
Through the second day of competition, the Gryphons slipped to 13th place overall.
