WEBSTER, N.Y.-The Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming team set a new team record in the 200 yard medley relay to highlight day one of the 2015 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, hosted by Nazareth College at Webster Aquatic Center on Wednesday. Action continues through Saturday, Feb. 21.
In Wednesday's preliminary session, sophomore
Gabby Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett), first year
Hannah Lawson (Portland, Ore./Pacific Crest Community School), sophomore
Colette Harley (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and sophomore
Jacqueline Quirk (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) put together an SLC record in the 200 yard medley relay. As the first Gryphons to complete the event in under two minutes, the foursome stopped the clock in 1:59.17 to beat out their own previous best by more than one second.
In the evening session, the same four Gryphons returned to the pool to swim in the finals and cut another second off their time, locking in a new SLC record of 1:58.14.
Wednesday's preliminaries also featured three individual events: the 500 yard freestyle, 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle.
Harley placed among the top 40 in the 500 freestyle, while senior
Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) swam a season-best of 5:53.40. Senior
Sonia Abraham (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) also swam the event, finishing in career-best fashion.
In the 200 IM, Lawson led the Gryphons with the team's best performance of the season, touching the wall in 2:22.17 for 39th place. Junior
Sam Amberchan (Alameda, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) also competed, while rookies
Sarah Schnapp (Taiwan/Tzu Chi) and
Rachel Barkowitz (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) posted collegiate bests. Sophomore
Lydia Mullan (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) swam a career best as well.
The 50 free saw Risica swim the team's fastest lap of the season, clocking in at 26.49 seconds. Rookie
Leah Myrtil (Boston, Mass./Elizabeth Seton Academy) posted the best time of her collegiate career (27.74), as did sophomore
Sky Mihaylo (Albany, Ore./West Albany). First year
Zoe Berg (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) also competed.
Through the first day of competition, the Gryphons stand in 15th place overall.
Racing at the 2015 UNYSCSA Championships continues through Saturday. Morning sessions begin at 10 a.m. with evening finals at 6 p.m. Live results can be followed at
