Friday FinalsÂ
WEBSTER, N.Y.—Junior
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) repeated as UNYSCSA 200 butterfly champion to lead Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming in day three of the 2015 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, hosted by Nazareth College at Webster Aquatic Center on Friday. Action concludes on Saturday, Feb. 21.
With the victory, Martinez has won his fourth butterfly title of the past two seasons, doubling up as repeat champion in both the 100 yard and 200 yard events.
Friday's title run began with a preliminary swim of 1:50.23, securing the Gryphon's spot as the top seed by more than half a second. In the evening session, Martinez was pushed to better his time by almost half a second, and his winning time of 1:49.78 was 0.3 second better than his closest rival. Both swims surpassed the NCAA Championship "B Cut" provisional qualifying time.
Having completed his maximum three individual events, Martinez finishes his 2015 UNYSCSA Championships with two butterfly titles and a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley. In 2014, Martinez won both butterfly events and set a championship meet record in the 200 butterfly, adding a third-place finish in the 200 IM. As a rookie, Martinez placed among the top 10 in all three events in 2013.
Martinez furthered his name in the SLC record books by breaking his team record in the 200 freestyle to finish Friday's events. As the lead off leg in the Green and White 800 yard medley relay, the junior split a time of 1:44.03, more than a half second better than his previous mark. Sophomore
Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)), rookie
Brendan McAlevy (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) and senior
Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) rounded out the relay in 7:55.04, the team's fastest time this season and good for 14th place overall.
In Friday's preliminary sessions, three Gryphons achieved personal bests. In the 100 backstroke, Chu swam a career best of 57.72 seconds, while Pulitano touched the wall in 1:10.29 for his own personal best. McAlevy also raced in the 100 back, finishing in 1:11.84.
Sophomore
Nick Ransom (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) was the final Gryphon in the pool in the morning session. He competed in the 100 yard breaststroke, setting a personal best of 1:18.87.
Through the third day of competition, the Gryphons retained their 13th place overall standing.
Racing at the 2015 UNYSCSA Championships continues through Saturday. Morning sessions begin at 10 a.m. with evening finals at 6 p.m. Live results can be followed at
